maybelline baby lips in pink punch review

If something has disappointed you in the past, should you give it a second chance?

I do believe in second chances, but Maybelline makeup messed up too many times. Sheer eyeshadows. Uninteresting formulas. Boring colours.

I thought I was done with the brand forever. But then the internet went crazy for Maybelline Baby Lips lip balms and I just had to see what the hype was about.

Turns out, not much. Here’s what I mean:

What’s In Maybelline Baby Lips In Pink Punch?

PETROLATUM

Petrolatum is plain old vaseline. Maybelline Baby Lips in Pink Punch uses it because it’s cheap. And because it works.

Petrolatum creates a barrier on the skin that slows down water loss. Now that water is trapped into the skin, it has no choice but to keep your lips soft and supple for longer.

While it’s at it, petrolatum also reduces inflammation and helps skin heal.

FYI, no petrolatum isn’t dangerous. Petrolatum is NOT petroleum. All impurities are removed before putting it in your lip balms. Phew!

SHEA BUTTER

Shea butter is a godsend for dry skin. Derived from the nut of the Shea tree, this fat is rich in moisturising fatty acids and antioxidants.

Fatty acids are the secret behind its moisturising power: they create a protective barrier on the skin that slows down water loss. Moisture stay in, hydrating skin from within.

FYI, shea butter is even more moisturising than mineral oil (what derms consider the gold standard for moisturisation). Its effects lasts for up to 8 hours, if not more!

Texture

The texture is on the thin side. It’s doesn’t feel heavy, waxy nor greasy on the lips.

Colour

Maybelline Baby Lips in Pink Punch looks like a bright fuchsia in the packaging. On the lips, things are a little different…

Pink Punch glides smoothly on the lips, leaving them tinted with a cool-toned pink shade with a nice sheen. While not bright, the colour isn’t sheer either.

It’s not the bubblegum pink I expected, and it’s not the most flattering shade for my skintone either, but it’s pretty and wearable.

Fragrance

True to its name, Pink Punch really smells like punch. I hate it. It’s way too fruity, sweet and strong for my taste. I screw up my nose whenever I take off the cap, but, luckily, I can’t smell it at all once it’s on the lips. Fragrance is very personal though, so you may like it.

How To Use It

Apply it on the lips every time you feel like you need the extra moisture (spoiler: it’s gonna be often…)

Performance & Personal Opinion

The only thing that vowed me about Maybelline Baby Lips in Pink Punch is the packaging. It’s definitely eye-catching!

But the lip balm itself? It just coats your lips, leaving them soft, hydrated and moisturised… for a couple of hours. I admit that the “8-hour hydration” claim Maybelline makes sounded too good to be true, but I was hoping its effect would last a bit longer.

It just misses the mark on all fronts. If I want to use a tinted lip balm, I prefer to opt for a sheerer one that keep my lips hydrated for longer. Or, if I want colour, I’d rather wear a lipstick over a moisturising lip balm.

Maybe if you’re a teenager with perfectly hydrated lips who needs more colour than moisture, this could work. Otherwise, save the money.

Who Is This For?

  • Someone with already perfectly hydrated lips who wants more than a hint of colour.

Packaging

Maybelline Baby Lips in Pink Punch is housed in a matching fuchsia tube. The name of the product is written on its see-though cap in big bold yellow letters. It looks childish, but adorable and will definitely catch your attention! You can’t really miss it on the shelf.

Does Maybelline Baby Lips In Pink Punch Live Up To Its Claims?

CLAIM TRUE?
Achieve intense lip repair + eight-hour hydration. It barely keeps my lips moisturised for two hours!
After one week, lips are visibly renewed. I’m not sure what that means. There’s nothing here that can exfoliate skin. But if you apply it every two hours, your lips will be softer in two weeks.

Do You Need It?

Nope. Maybe if you like the colour. But it hardly moisturises…
