do copper pillows prevent wrinkles?

Myth or truth: can a copper pillow prevent wrinkles?

FYI, I’m not talking of a copper-coloured pillow (phew, I like my pink 😉 ). I’m talking about pillows made out of copper oxide fibers.

Yes, that’s a thing.

When I first heard it, I was like, “that must be so bloody fake! What the heck are they gonna come up with to fool us next?”

Yeah, I’m sceptical like that.

But when I started to dig deeper, I found out there’s some truth in it. Turns out, copper pillows aren’t a complete scam, after all.

What Are Copper Pillows?

The most famous is Illuminage Skin Rejuvenating Pillowcase with Copper Peptides ($60.00), so I’ll use it as an example, ok?

It’s a pillowcase made with 100% Cupron Copper Oxide Polyester. (In case you’re wondering, Cupron is the company that developed and patented this copper technology).

This copper pillowcase is said to do two things:

  • Prevent fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improve the overall appearance of skin

The best part? You can put it in the washing machine (just don’t use fabric softener!).

How Do Copper Pillows Work?

The idea here is that, when you sleep, the copper ions migrate to your skin, where they boost collagen, the protein that keeps skin firm.

We know that copper peptides do produce more collagen than vitamins A and C. Ok, the studies were done in vitro instead than on real skin, but at least we have some evidence this technology could work.

Interestingly, copper peptides only boost collagen, but don’t improve the texture of the skin, so don’t throw your vitamins A & C serums in the bin just yet.

But, does copper work in pillowcases, too?

This is where it gets tricky.

I only found one study that claims this technology works. And guess who did it? Cupron! Surprise, surprise!

I have to give them credit, though. It’s a double blind, placebo controlled, parallel, randomized clinical study, so more reliable than your usual manufacturer’s study.

I bet you know what they’ve found out, though.

*Drumroll*

Sleeping on copper oxide-containing pillowcases,” the scientists discovered, results in reduction of wrinkles depth and overall improvement of skin appearance.

BUT, only by a mere 9%!

So, yeah, copper pillows work. But don’t expect to see a big difference any time soon.

The Bottom Line

If money isn’t a concern for you and you want to tackle wrinkles on ALL fronts, the Illuminage Copper Pillow may be a good investment for you. If not, don’t worry about it. Forget the pillow and invest in sunscreen. That can prevent up to 80% of premature aging. Now, that’s what I call making a difference!
